Beautiful Brunettes

Brunettes unite! Brown hair doesn't have to  be boring. There are subtle and dramatic ways to enhance your earthy tresses without making a complete color change or becoming a slave to hair color.

Brunette is beautiful. Your hair color may fit your complexion and personality perfectly, but you may still be looking for a change. The following ten ways to change your brown hair are subtle and designed to enhance you’re your tones, not change your color completely.

  1. Try a color update with little commitment.  Warm up your hair color with a red or auburn color wash. Glaze your brown hair with a translucent color gloss such as Redken Shades EQ or PM Shines. Your new color will gently fade away within six weeks.
  2. Get lively hair color with even less commitment. Use any of the many color pigmented shampoos to add golden tones, red tones or deeper brown tones. Use blue or purple pigmented shampoo to tone out warmth and create a neutral brown tone. These enhancements fade within two shampoos.
  3. Have you been tinting your hair solid brown to cover gray? It is your natural color and looks ok but it’s boring? Use foiling or a cap to add a few highlights through the bangs area and the top. A weak lightening solution will lighten hair a shade or two, or more if you choose. These few highlights require very little extra work but soften skin tones and brighten your face.
  4. Do you have light to medium natural brown hair? Add lowlights. These are strands of tinted hair that is at least two shades darker than your natural color. The lowlights add depth and richness to your color. When adding them, stay away from the hairline and the part. They will grow out quite easily if you choose not to keep up the process.
  5. To your light to medium toned brown hair, add highlights of at least two shades lighter and lowlights of at least two shades darker. Create fine strands and alternate – lighter, natural, and darker throughout your hair. Again, stay away from the front hair line and the part.
  6. To your light or medium toned brown hair, add strands of blonde and strands of auburn.  The shade of blonde and auburn will depend on how light or dark you hair is. Create very fine strands of the two shades, and watch your hair shimmer as it moves.
  7. Do you have dark brown hair? Add strands of deep red brown. If the red brown is darker than your natural color, all you have to do is add the color. If your natural color is very dark, you will pre-lighten the strands to a gold tone and then apply red semi-permanent color gloss over all of your hair. The red color will adhere to the pre-lightened strands and should stay in over six weeks.
  8. Section off about 1/3 to 1/2 inch of hair all around your face. Lighten the hair in this area about two shades to a lighter brown. This softens skin tones and facial features, and is very easy to  retouch as your hair grows.
  9. Section off the hair in the nape area – all hair below the occipital bone of your head. Tint the hair in this area at least two shades darker than your natural hair color. This is very effective if your hair is layered so that the darker hair extends out from under the lighter hair. If your hair is one length, the dark hair peaks out occasionally.
  10. Are you finding more and more gray or white hairs invading your natural brown hair? Using foil or painting with a hair color brush, add strands of your own brown tone to reduce the amount of graywithout tinting all over.

Find a New Hairdresser

8/31/2015

The search for a new hairdresser can be one of life’s more stressful experiences. All you want is to find someone who listens to what you have to say, suggests new styles periodically, lets you know what is flattering to you personally, and ultimately, does your hair the way you want it done. Sounds easy, right? Wrong.

Women will stay with an unsatisfactory hair stylist for years just because it can be a disastrous experience trying someone new. Finding the great hairdresser is not easy, but with a little patience and some prior planning, the process can be rewarding.

  • Rule one: Don’t rush. Do your homework. Find someone with a style you like, an acquaintance or even a stranger and ask them about their hairdresser. They will be flattered. Be brave. Keep searching. Get several referrals. Then you are ready to go for the Consultation.
    • Consultations are free. This is where you just talk to the hairdresser. You explain what you are looking for in a style and you also size up the hairdresser. She should ask questions about your history with your hair and how much time you want to spend styling it. Don’t dress up or dress down for the visit. The hairdresser needs to know your personal style. The only indication she has is the picture you present and through what you tell her. It is essential that the two of you have an understanding here. Also expect some suggestions. Beware of the stylist who insists on his or her own idea of what you should wear. Be certain that you are in agreement before the actual haircut appointment.
Observe the hairdresser. Is her hair stylish and well kept? An ultra-trendy style is not always the best indication of an educated stylist. Though it might be just the thing if that’s the kind of look you are going for. Is it stylish, flattering to their features and appropriate for their clothing style?
  • Rule two: Be Prepared. Before your visit to the salon, find pictures of styles you like. Look in fashion or other magazines. Collect pictures of stars and personalities. Any style that strikes your fancy. You can also take along pictures of partial styles, if you like the back of one and the front or the crown of another. The salon will also have style books available for you to look at. If you plan to do this, arrive at least twenty minutes in advance of your appointment. A busy stylist will only have a certain amount of time allotted for you. You will not want to waste too much time trying to make a basic decision.
  • Rule three: Don’t relax yet! Now you are sitting in the chair, ready for the cut. Sit up straight. Don’t fidget or cross your legs. Feet flat on the footrest. If you lean to one side, even slightly, and your hairdresser doesn’t notice, the balance of the cut can be thrown off. Fidgeting is irritating as well as apt to cause mistakes in the line. By the way, keep your head still while you are talking. This is one occasion when it is not the rule to look into the eyes of the person you are talking to. You may talk to her reflection in the mirror.

And one last piece of advice, examine your motives. Be careful about being impulsive.

Times when it is not wise to change your style are:

  • when you have just broken up with your boyfriend
  • when you have had a fight with your husband
  • when you have just changed jobs.
It’s best to be calm, cool and of sound mind. If you are not; opt for a trim - and a manicure.

I'm Dieting. I'm not Deprived.

7/17/2015

Dieting and feeling deprived does nothing to improve my attitude. That kind of diet is short lived and ends in failure and see-saw weight loss and gain.

It is possible to change your diet, in order to lose weight, without feeling deprived. This involves  “fat-causing” habits--exchanging them for habits that cause weight loss and weight stabilization.

Use these tips to lose pounds and maintain stable  weight.

Recognize what makes you over-eat and work to change those habits
  • Stress eating – Feeling stressed? Occupy yourself with a something healthy until the temptation passes. Take a walk, exercise or simply drink a bottle of water.
  • Emotional eating – Do you have a problem with ‘comfort’ foods? Grab a healthy snack or a bottle of water--load your refrigerator of cupboard with them.
  • Do you eat when you are sad? Take control. Walk or exercise and drink water.
  • Do you eat when you are bored? See all of the above. Find a time and mind consuming hobby. – Books, Jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, beading, exercise, etc.

Often hunger pains are nothing more than dehydration. Before you eat, try drinking water first. Buy bottled water by the case and always have a bottle available

Don’t skip meals. Skipping meals may slow your metabolism. It saps your energy and  increases the risk of eating the wrong things like grabbing a candy bar or a  fast-food cheeseburger on the run.

Plan ahead to eat four smaller meals throughout the day.

Cut out 'white' - bread, cereal, rice, pasta. Eat only 100% whole grain!

Eat well-balanced meals.
Fruits, vegetables and whole grains offer large portions for a small amount of calories. A meal should include:
Large serving of vegetables
Lean Meat
Whole grains
Fat Free Milk
If you need a desert, eat fruit

Healthy Snacks
Apple
Orange
Small bowl of grapes
One ounce of Nuts
Baby carrot sticks

  • Don't go to the grocery store hungry. Eat a healthy snack and make a list.

Memory Loss Risk

7/9/2015

Over 600,000 Americans, under the age of 65, have early onset Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Add to that the number of those who are over 65 and the threat begins to hit home.

The threat of losing the capacity to take care of one’s self in later years is a frightening thought. Almost everyone I know has at least one relative or close acquaintance who suffers from noticeable memory loss.

I remember hearing an old wife’s tale when I was young. My relatives always called fish ‘brain food.’ As it turns out, it wasn’t a tall tale after-all, there is some truth in it.

Recent studies show that you can lower your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease by eating, salmon, mackerel and herring. These fish contain a high amount of Omega-3 acids called DHA. DHA is thought by nutritionists to protect against memory loss.

One study showed that people older than age 65, who ate Omega-3 rich fish at least once a week, were 60% less likely to develop Alzheimer’s as compared with those who rarely ate these fish. For eating only one fish dinner per week, that is a huge benefit.

Several studies suggest a Mediterranean diet for improved brain health. This diet is rich in fruits, nuts, legumes, whole grains, fish, wine and olive oil. These are all Omega-3 rich foods. The Mediterranean diet is also LOW in red meat.

The following is a list of habits that are thought to help prevent memory loss. Follow as many of these suggestions as possible to increase your odds of avoiding Alzheimer’s and dementia.

  • *Eat oily fish rich in DHA (in particular Omega-3) These are cold water fish – salmon, mackerel and herring.
  • *Drink fruit and vegetable juice at least three times a week. – This cuts your risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia by a huge 76%!
  • *Drink coffee. Coffee drinkers are 30% less likely to develop Alzheimer’s. The caffeine keeps the brain alert.
  • *Drink green tea. The main antioxidant in it helps to remove Alzheimer’s causing culprits, such as iron, from brain cells.
  • *Control your weight. People who are obese at midlife are three times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s.
Begin now to protect yourself against Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. It's never too late.

My father suffered from vascular dementia. Watching him and the others who were residents of the Alzheimer unit brought home the importance of following the correct diet and researching all avenues to brain health.

Good Fat vs. Bad Fat and Preventing Stroke

6/26/2015

It’s time for my yearly checkup with the doctor and I’ve been thinking about my health. I worry about preventing stroke – which seems to run in my family.

They (health and nutrition authorities) keep telling us, “Cut down on the amount of fat in your daily diet.” What does this mean exactly? Our bodies need some fat to function. Fat is important to brain health, among other things. What fat do I cut out?

According to the health care authorities, we should cut out or severely limit solid fats and trans-fat.

Trans-fat is essentially man-made fat that has been found to contribute to the risk of heart attack. Researchers estimate 6 to 19 percent of heart attacks and related deaths per year could be avoided by eliminating trans-fat.

Doctors talk about good fat and bad fat. Food fats are polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids. These fats are liquid at room temperature and are found in fish, nuts, and vegetables.

Good Fat

Monounsaturated fats are found in:

·         Olives and olive oil

·         Canola oil

·         Peanut oil

·         Cashews

·         Almonds

·         Peanuts

·         Avocados

Polyunsaturated fats are found in:

·         Corn

·         Soybean

·         Safflower oil

·         Cottonseed oil

·         Fish

Bad Fat

Saturated fat is found in:

·         Whole milk

·         Butter

·         Cheese

·         Ice cream

·         Red meat

·         Chocolate

·         Coconuts

·         Coconut milk

·         Coconut oil

Trans-fat is found in:

·         Most margarine

·         Vegetable shortening

·         Partially hydrogenated vegetable oil

·         Deep-fried chips

·         Many fast foods

·         Most commercial baked goods

I can see that more planning is needed to change my way of eating, beginning at the grocery store. I’ll read labels and be sure that low fat items don’t compensate by adding more sugar or salt. I’ll focus on fruits, vegetables and 100% whole grain products. I’m told if I change my eating habits for the better my chances of becoming a stroke victim will diminish.

Dietary guidelines call for anywhere from five to thirteen servings of fruits and vegetable a day depending on your calorie intake. So the mid-line is nine servings every day. That’s four and one half cups.

These healthy habits were suggested:

Always eat breakfast. This is the meal that many people skip when trying to lose weight but they shouldn’t. A healthy breakfast gets your metabolism going – helping to start burning calories. Choose whole grain cereal – not the sugared kind! – with fruit or low fat yogurt.

It is permissible and even suggested that you eat a couple of small, healthy snacks between meals. This helps to keep you from over-eating at mealtime.

Losing weight comes from consuming fewer calories than you use during the day.

Portion control is of utmost importance. Plan ahead. Don’t prepare more than you need or don’t put it on your plate.

Eat slowly. Always sit while eating.

Drink water or unsweetened ice tea with your meal for a fuller feeling.

Exercise. Start an exercise routine so that you are burning more calories. You can start with as little as a 20 to 30 minute walk every day.

Pretty Lips

6/24/2015

This is for those of us who are over fifty.  And for everyone else, since you know you will be there someday.
Once natural full and pouty lips have become thinner and flatter. The naturally rosy color is fading. What happened?  Where did those alluring lips go?
  • As we get older, our bodies produce less collagen. Collagen, the protein that supports the body's soft tissue, is what causes lips to be plump.
  • So, one more thing to deal with as we age!  Ultraviolet rays can cause collagen to break down, so it is important to
  • wear lipstick or lip balm with sunscreen to protect our lips. Take a Vitamin C supplement. It helps to support the collagen in your skin.

 Makeup tips for thin lips:
  •  Use lip liner. It should be the same color as your lips or very close, but not darker. Line the outside edge of your lips but don’t go into the corners of your mouth.
  • Use lipstick with a slight shine to give your lips a more rounded appearance. (Not so shiny that you look like you've been eating fried chicken.)

Change Your Bob's Look

layered bob
layered curly bob
Your bob hairstyle is both a timeless classic style and up-to-the-minute fashion. It is easy to wear and almost always ready to go. However, the one drawback of the bob is that, since it is so easy, it is apt to always look the same. The blessing of this easy style is also the curse. Bobs can be boring if they are always worn in the same manner. To keep your bob hairstyle from becoming boring, you may have to make a special effort to change the look of it once in a while.
A smooth layered bob was easily changed into this fun bouncy style. A narrow flat iron was used to create loose ribbon curls throughout the top area. The front, sides and nape areas were left as they were so that the sides framed the face and the nape stayed close to the neck. To get this look, select a large section of hair from the top. Clamp the flat iron over the strand at the base. Slowly drag the iron out toward the ends to warm and smooth the hair. Immediately, return the iron to the base of the strand. Drag it out and turn it to create the loose ribbon curl. Spray each new curl with hair spray to prevent it from loosening. Only eight to ten curls are needed to create this look.

bob half-updo
When you are bored with the ribbon curls, the style can be changed one more time. Leaving the bangs and sides where they are, divide off and pull the top section back into a loose ponytail. Fluff the curly ends so that they cover the band. Some of the curls in the back are left down so that they blend with the curls of the ponytail. This fun half updo can be both casual and dressy, depending on your attire.
If your bob is asymmetrical such as the Beckham bob, try adding two or three loose ribbon curls in the front only and only on the long side.

Hair Color Change Up
The classic hair color for a classic bob is all one beautiful rich shade. For an exciting change, highlight your bob with chunky light pieces around your face. Smaller strands behind the chunky pieces help to blend the color to darker hair in the nape area. Hair below the occipital bone can be left natural or tinted a shade or two darker than your own color.

Blonde Layered Angle Bob

5/21/2015

This is a layered angle bob that any woman over forty or even over fifty can wear. It is very up to date in styling but softened so that it is flattering to an aging face. The shape of the bob is cut in, stacked in back and as a last step, the sides are texturized so that they lay close to the face. Texturizing on top helps to add fullness. It is a beautiful hairstyle.
short blonde layered bob
Layered, short bob
But in this article I want to feature this model’s beautiful hair color.
The model’s natural hair color is dark blonde but she prefers and looks well in extra light blonde.

  • The first step is to lighten it with a high-lift tint. The tint used has a violet base to help cut through gold tones. It is mixed with 30 volume developer. This lightens her natural color to light golden blonde – nice but not light enough to suit her taste and still too gold.
  • The next step is to highlight her hair with another high-lift violet base tint mixed with 40 volume developer. Bleach could be used, however the results are easier to control using tint. Using bleach may also be more damaging. The extra light blonde is now exactly what the model loves but adding one more touch will add the needed dimension and depth to her hair color.
  • As a last step fine strands of medium blonde were added. They were placed carefully under the outer layers to add shadows and depth.

This hair color combination may seem complicated but it is easily retouched every four weeks.

Upkeep may be different from month to month. Decide what is needed in the hair color before beginning.

  • If the highlights are still bright and the lowlights are un-faded, all that is needed is to retouch the new growth. Apply the base color to the new growth only and process. Do not run it through the ends before shampooing.
  • Sometimes too much time may have been spent in the sun so there is no need to highlight. Spray the ends of the hair with liquid protein or leave in conditioner to reduce the porosity, then add lowlights. While the foils are still in the hair, apply the base color to the new growth. Process both colors at the same time and shampoo.
  • Sometimes her hair color will be in need of a complete overhaul. Spray the ends with liquid protein or leave in conditioner to even the porosity. Add highlights and lowlights at the same time, being careful to keep track of the placement of each color.
As soon as the foils are in place, apply the base color to the new growth. Process the correct amount of time and shampoo.

This is not hair color that should be done at home. To get this look, visit a professional colorist.

Layered Bob with Variations

5/21/2015

I love chin length bobs. The chin length makes it easy to style and layering gives it fullness and lots of movement Bobs are always in style and this layered version is sassy and fun as well. It is one of the most versatile bobs. A low side part provides a dramatic drape. Tuck the heavy side behind your ear or let it fall seductively over one eye. Tuck the light side behind your ear while the heavy side falls forward.
layered bob
To create this look.
  • Shampoo and condition with body building products – usually labeled as ‘volumizing’ or ‘fine hair.’ If, on the other hand, you have hair with lots of natural body, try ‘smoothing’ or ‘moisturizing’ products.

  • Blot your hair with a towel and apply styling foam starting at the root area and extending it out to the ends.

  • Blow your hair dry using a large round brush.

  • If you prefer more curl on the ends than the brush provides, use a large barreled curling iron on the top and crown.
    • To keep the fullness longer:
    • Pick up one section of hair and curl it with the curling iron.
    • Take the iron out. Before you release the hair, backcomb it slightly at the base.
    • Spray the backcombing with flexible hold hair spray.
    • Gently place the hair.
    • Continue through all the hair at the crown.
Layered bob with headband
For a casual look and for more control, use a headband to keep your hair back.
  • For this look:
  • After your shampoo, apply styling foam and scrunch it using a towel.
  • While your hair is still damp, insert the headband.
  • Using a narrow headband, slide it into your hair starting at the hairline. Slide it about half way back. Then, slide it back forward slightly to push in a little fullness around your face.
Bob hair with headband
  • For this look, blow your hair under smoothly and part it in a low side part.
  • Fold a scarf so that it is two or three inches wide. Insert another, smaller scarf or kerchief inside for more bulk. This also will produce the effect of more height on top.
  • Place the center of the scarf on top of your head. It should be at the hairline allowing the bangs to drape across your forehead with the ends tucked under it.
  • Tie the scarf at the back of your neck so that it secures the bangs and sides. Allow the back of your hair to fall over the knot. It’s OK if the ends show.

Turn Bobs into Updo

5/21/2015

As always, updos are very much in fashion. Elegant up swept hair is great for parties, prom, weddings and for the office. Bob hair cuts are also very much in style.  How do you have the benefit of both fashionable hairstyles – the bob and the updo? It takes some imagination, styling techniques and the use of styling products,  and a little practice, but an updo is easily in your future.
bob updo

This bob is one length with long front that drapes over one eye.
  • Shampoo and condition with body building products. Updos require lots of body to work with.
  • Apply firm hold mousse or styling gel and blow your hair dry with a large round brush. If your hair does not curl easily, set it with large hot rollers.
  • To style, back-brush all of the hair from the crown to the back. Spray the teasing lightly with hair spray.
  • If there is enough hair at the nape, fold it over and pin it flat with bobby pins.
  • Start at the middle back area and gently smooth the teased hair down and tuck the ends under at the nape area or just above the bobby pins.
  • Alternately, you can smooth it into a vertical roll and slide bobby pins through it to hold it.
  • Part the front so that it sweeps to the side, and smooth the crown area back.
  • Use hair spray to hold your bob updo in place
Tips
  • To maintain maximum control of your hair, use an ample amount of styling mousse or styling gel.
  • When smoothing, use a very light touch so that you conceal the back-brushing but leave the fullness.
  • Not all of the ends will be long enough to pin in place. That is why styling product and hair spray is used for control.
bob updo 2
This updo is great if you usually wear your bob with bangs. Comb them off your face for a sophisticated transition.

  • Prepare your hair for this bob updo as instructed above.
  • Lightly back-brush all of your hair and spray it with hair spray.
  • Use your fingers to comb your hair straight back from the front. This style is not combed smooth. Ridges are left in for texture.
  • Depending on the length of your bob, either form the back into a roll and secure with bobby pins or smooth it down and to the center.
  • The nape area (only about one inch from the bottom) of this bob is left down and allowed to flip out slightly.
Alternative finish:
If the hair in the crown area of your bob is long, you may be able to form loose curls in the back. Pin them in with bobby pins and let a few tendrils
hang down to blend in with the shorter nape area.
