Fruits and Vegetables Can Protect You From Stroke

A recent study indicates that 3 to 5 servings of fruits and vegetables everyday help to reduce the risk of strokeFive or more servings may give even more protection. The study said that the risk of stroke was 11% lower for those consuming 3 – 5 servings a day and it was 26% lower for those who consumed more than 5 servings a day.

What is a stroke?

It is when there is a sudden death of brain cells caused by impaired blood supply. When oxygen and nutrients are not delivered in the blood flow, it causes damage to the brain.

The impaired blood flow can be caused by a blockage or rupture of an artery leading to the brain.

 

How do vegetables and fruits help?

There are many health benefits from fruits and vegetables but one of them, fiber, is said to help lower cholesterol. We know that high cholesterol can block arteries.  High fiber diets may lower cholesterol by 8 – 15%.

When I concentrate on eating 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, I eat far less fatty meat and fatty or sugary snacks. – double benefit!

 

What is a serving?

A piece of fruit such as an apple or banana is a serving.

My large bowl of strawberries is two servings.

One half cup of vegetables is a serving.

Your salad might be two servings.
