As women age – over forty and beyond - the challenge
is to stay current with fashion while wearing style that are flattering to
changing faces and bodies. Clothing has to fit changing body types. Hair
styles must take into account softer facial lines and changing hair color
and texture.
In order to look up to date, your hair doesn’t have to
be (depending on where you live or what year it is) the trendy stick
straight and flat or completely wild and crazy.
Up-to-date hair styles are meant to blend with who you
are and your personality
while still paying attention to what fits in with current fashion.
Fluff and softness are often the lines to look for in
a style for the mature "over forty” woman's face. Straight, harsh lines
often (not always) tend to be unflattering.
This layered style is blunt-cut at the bottom with
some texturizing to help the nape section flip out slightly. Allowing the
flip makes it easier to keep her hair in place with high collared blouses
and coats. This model can also comb the nape area down and allow it to lay
close to her neck. She has short spikey bangs that soften her forehead
without appearing heavy on her face. Heavy bangs are often too weighty for
aging eyes. The sides of this style are tucked behind her ears but may
also be feathered forward.
To get this look, use body building shampoo and
conditioner designed for fine hair. Dry and style using a blow dryer and
round brush. Use a large (one inch) curling iron or a narrow flat iron to
put a bend in the hair without creating a lot of individual curls. After
the hair is dry and styled, use a light weight styling pomade to separate
the layers.
To use pomade simply place a small amount of product
into the palm of your hand. Rub your palms together, run your fingers
through your hair and scrunch. Finish arranging the style with your
fingers.
Top off your style with flexible hold hair spray to
hold it in place without making it stiff.
Our model's hair has started to show some gray. Her natural hair color has
also darkened and appears drab. Blonde highlights were applied throughout.
The blonde blends in the gray, lightens and brightens some of the darker
hair. In this way the highlighting blends the different colors of her hair
to give her a soft warm glow. This is a much softer appearing hair color
without the need for monthly touch-ups on new growth. Depending on how
fast her hair grows, the highlights can be reapplied in 8 to 12 weeks.
